Every Summer (and sometimes in December) Labor Studies faculty and stundents lead a walking tour of historic sites during the 1946 Oakland General Strike as part of LaborFest events around the Bay.  Karin Hart (left) helps a walker to read a quote from a particpent in the 1946 General strike that described what it was like to "take the power out of the tower" to the 70 other people on last summer's walk on July 28th.

The Labor Studies Program is designed to offer both background and current trends in various aspects of labor-management relations.  Here is how the California Community Colleges Taxonomy of Programs (6th Edition) describes the labor studies program:

0516.00 – Labor and Industrial Relations:

Describes the history and development of the labor movement, including the analysis and interpretation of federal and state regulations, union contracts, labor negotiations, conciliation, arbitration, and grievance procedures.

New students apply to the college & enroll in a Labor Studies class.   Continuing students click here to enroll in a class.

Earn a Certificate of Completion in Labor Studies! Here are the required 21 units of classes needed:

  • LABST 010 American Labor Movement (3 units)
  • LABST 012 Collective Bargaining (3 units)
  • LABST 013 Labor Economics for Labor & Community Leaders (3 units)
  • LABST 014 Grievance Handling & Arbitration (3 units)
  • LABST 030 Labor Law (3 units)
  • Plus six (6) units of Labor Studies elective units

Fisnished your classes and want to petition for your certificate? Fill out this online Petition Form for AA Degree or Certificate, printi out and make on appointment with a counselor to sign off on it by calling 510/464-3152, or 3153 for an appointment. They are open until 7pm on Monday and Tuesday evenings during the semester. NOTE: You can not do a "drop-in" appointment to get a certificate or degree approved.

Earn an Associate Arts degree in Labor Studies by completing the above classes, plus the required general education classes.

Tuesdays LABOR STUDIES 012: COLLECTIVE BARGAINING (Registration Code 24402) 6-9:20pm - Structure, content, strategies and relationships between the parties engaged in collective bargaining.

Mondays LABOR STUDIES 016: RIGHTS IN WORKPLACE (Code 24405) 6-9:20pm - Comprehensive survey of employee rights in the workplace.

Wednesdays LABOR STUDIES 015: LABOR LEADERSHIP & COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS (code 24404) 6-9:20pm - Survey of leadership strategies with practice applying methods for labor leaders and other community activists.

Thursdays LABOR STUDIES 013: ECONOMICS FOR LABOR AND COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP  (code 24403) 6-9:20pm - American and global economic forces impinging on employment, taxation, income distribution, public policy and collective bargaining.

Alt. Sats. LABOR STUDIES 214A-D: LABOR HERITAGE/CHORUS (codes 21345 & 21348)  Starts 1/31 from 12:30-5pm - Study of labor history through songs.

3 Sats. LABOR STUDIES 202: UNION ORGANIZING (code 24406) 4/12, 4/19 & 4/26 – Examines rights workers to organize a union.
