LIS 85: Introduction to Information Resources

Course Description:

LIS 85 is a 2 Unit CSU/UC Transferable Course. The class is taught in a short-term (8 weeks), ONLINE format (with one REQUIRED meeting).

 

Introduction to basic concepts and tools used to do research in academic libraries. Course is a 2 unit, CSU/UC transferable course with emphasis on:

·         How to develop a research topic and search strategies for print and online resources including reference books, catalogs, indexes, specialized databases, and the Internet..

·         Find, locate, evaluate, and use information appropriate for college-level research

·         Document information using MLA format.

 

Required Computer Skills:

This is an ONLINE class and involves a significant amount of computer work and ONLINE activity.

To be successful in this class, you MUST be comfortable with the following:

1.    Use a computer mouse to navigate a computer screen and Internet browser

2.    Type, save, and email a document using a word processing program and work between multiple windows on the computer.

3.    Print from a browser and word processing program

4.    Save files to a disk or flash drive

5.    Compose, send, and receive email messages

6.    Attach files to email documents
